Bulgaria and Romania join the 25

With the entry of Bulgaria and Romania, the EU now had 27 members. These new accessions followed those of the fifth enlargement that allowed 10 new Member States to join the European Union on 1 May 2004. On the same date, Slovenia joined the euro zone, becoming the first of the new Member States to adopt the single currency (to be joined soon after by Malta and Cyprus).
