1804

Coronation of Napoleon

Although Napoleon Bonaparte spread the new ideas that came out of the French Revolution across Europe (the abolition of privilege and of the feudal system, the Civil Code, individual freedoms, etc.), he did so by military conquest, through the domination of France over the other nations. Certainly, the desire to unify Europe was among Napoleon's ambitions. At the time of his coronation by the Pope in 1804, the new Emperor declared, "I have not succeeded from Louis XVI but from Charlemagne".But the nations of Europe allied against French domination, culminating in the defeat of Napoleon. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna established a new European order which was to last in one form or another until 1914: the 'concert of nations', which saw the states of Europe meeting regularly at diplomatic congresses.
