Creation of the European Social Fund

The signatories of the Treaty of Rome did not intend to limit European integration to the establishment of a common market. From the outset, the Community took actions at the social level to accompany the opening up of European economies. The first measure of this kind, the creation of the European Social Fund (ESF), was designed to support training and skills conversion for workers. Extended on a regular basis, the ESF has 75 billion euro available for the period 2007-2013.
