Enlargement of the European Union to take in ten new members

The fall of the 'Iron Curtain' soon raised the issue of relations between the European Union and the countries of the former Soviet bloc. The Fifteen opted for complete integration of these countries into the Union. Eight countries of Central and Eastern Europe, plus the Mediterranean islands of Cyprus and Malta, acceded to the EU on 1 May 2004: these were the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Bulgaria and Romania joined the Twenty-Five in 2007.
