Faced with revolt from MEPs, the Santer Commission prefers to resign

To succeed Jacques Delors, the Heads of State and Government eventually chose Jacques Santer from Luxembourg. Having worked successfully on the implementation of the single currency, Santer experienced a difficult end to his term in office. The Commission that he headed was accused of administrative mismanagement by the European Parliament. To avert a motion of censure, the Commission opted to collectively resign, less than a year from the end of their mandate.
