First elections to the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage

As agreed at the Paris Summit in 1974, the new legislature of the European Parliament was elected by direct universal suffrage. The French politician Simone Veil was placed at the head of an institution which as yet had little real power. But its new-found democratic legitimacy allowed the European Parliament to increase its political influence very rapidly, and successive treaties expanded its competences. It has now become a fully-fledged legislative body for the European Union, alongside the Council of the EU.
