Germany reunited within the European Communities

In 1989, the unexpected fall of the Berlin Wall put an end to the European order that emerged from the Second World War, which split the continent into two camps. A year later, Germany was unified. For the European Communities, this was not a further enlargement, legally speaking, but an extension of the Federal Republic of Germany. No accession procedure was required, just a few institutional changes to take account of the increased size of Germany.
