Greece becomes a member of the European Communities

Having been associated with the Communities since 1961, Greece found itself diplomatically isolated after the military coup in 1967. In 1974, the fall of the Colonels and the return to democracy brought the Hellenic Republic close to Western Europe once more. Greece submitted its candidature in 1975, to become the tenth member of the European Communities in 1981.
