ITER and Galileo: Europe at the forefront of science

In 2005, the European Union scored two successes that demonstrated its ability to run projects and take concrete action: the ITER and Galileo. The first, the experimental reactor ITER, is at the heart of a global research programme on nuclear fusion co-sponsored by the European Union. The second, the Galileo programme, is the first European satellite navigation system, a future competitor to the American GPS.
