Johannes Althusius, the first thinker on federalism

Theorists of European unification have always sought the right balance between the unity of Europe itself and the diversity of its components.Among these thinkers, the German jurist Johannes Althusius (1557-1638) was the originator of the idea of 'subsidiarity', a fundamental principle behind the present-day workings of the European Union. According to this principle, every political problem should be addressed at the relevant level, with higher authority only invoked if it proves more effective. Subsidiarity is the basis of federal ties. The ideas of Althusius on the structure of the level of power were then taken forward by Montesquieu in particular.
