Launch of the Erasmus programme

In 1987, the European Commission instituted measures designed to facilitate exchanges of students between European universities. This initiative was given the name of a Renaissance humanist, famous for his travels and his spirit of openness: Erasmus of Rotterdam. Since the establishment of Erasmus, 1.2 million students have completed a period of study abroad thanks to this initiative. A true cultural phenomenon, Erasmus has become an emblem of the European spirit.
