Signing of the Treaties of Rome

In the wake of the energy shortage provoked by the Suez crisis in 1956, Jean Monnet felt the Europeans needed to unite within an atomic energy community that would take them towards self-sufficiency in energy. For their part, the partners of France were more in favour of creating a common market. In order to reconcile all these interests, two distinct treaties were signed in Rome, one relating to the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), and the other instituting the European Economic Community (EEC).
