Signing of the Treaty of Lisbon

The Treaty of Lisbon was signed by the Member States on 13 December 2007. It is in the course of ratification. It amends the European treaties currently in force, but does not replace them. It establishes a more democratic and transparent European Union, with an increased role for national parliaments and the European Parliament, the 'right of popular initiative', and a clarification of the relations between the Member States and the European Union.
