Signing of the Treaty of Paris instituting the ECSC

Born out of the Schuman Declaration, the European Coal and Steel Community comprised Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. By sharing their production of coal and steel, a solidarity of interests replaced the previous rivalry and rancour between France and Germany, just five years after the end of the War. Another innovation of the ECSC was that the organisation opted for a style of supranational management that broke with earlier intergovernmental experiments.
