The apogee of the Roman Empire

At the height of its power, the Roman Empire covered the whole of the Mediterranean basin, stretching all the way to Asia Minor. A culture developed under the Pax Romana (Latin for 'Roman peace'), inspired by Greek humanism and the Christian faith, which formed the basis of 'European civilisation'.
