The European Council at Fontainebleau brings an end to the budget crisis
For several months, the Ten had been debating the future Community budget. The British felt that they were contributing too much to a budget dominated by the CAP. Inflexible on this issue, Margaret Thatcher claimed a 'fair return' for her country (uttering the famous: 'I want my money back !'). Thanks to the emerging understanding between François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl, a compromise was finally reached at Fontainebleau: the financial resources of the Communities were increased, the funding of the CAP was reduced, and United Kingdom had part of its contribution refunded by its partners. This system of refunds was amended at the European Council meeting in December 2005.
