The first Lomé Accords

In the 1960s, the Yaoundé Conventions had made it possible for the former French colonies in Africa to share in European economic development. The accession of the United Kingdom brought the twenty independent states of the Commonwealth into the European orbit. This was a turning point in the European policy on cooperation. The Lomé Convention gave privileged access to the Community market to practically all goods produced in 46 countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (the ACP states). Financial aid for development was also granted, particularly to support agricultural production. This commercial preference granted to the ACP countries would remain the chief pillar of European policy on development aid.
