Winston Churchill writes a memorandum on the United States of Europe

A proponent of cooperation between countries, Winston Churchill, the then British Prime Minister, wrote a memorandum on the United States of Europe in 1942. Noting that Europe had been at the heart of two global conflicts, he proposed to remedy this violence between countries by means of a union of the peoples of Europe. In September 1946, Churchill took up this idea again in his famous speech at the University of Zurich, in which he invoked a common European heritage which could serve as the basis for creating a European family in a regional organisation which he called the United States of Europe.
